Products obtained by weaving have an unusual beauty. They did not lose their popularity even during the period of standard life in the USSR, retaining it to this day. According to tradition, the material for weaving baskets and other things was a vine, but now it is not available to everyone. There are more common materials that are also suitable for weaving. These can be called tubes folded from newsprint. Paper is not only easily accessible, but also malleable, flexible. Weaving baskets from ordinary paper itself will be much easier for beginners than from the same vine.
Surely you have a few old newspapers that have long been read and no one needs. They are just right for weaving a souvenir in the form of a basket. If you do not know how to make such a craft, our detailed master class will help you.
So, you decided to make a basket out of paper with your own hands. Here's what you need to prepare:
First you need to prepare the paper for weaving by making it look like a vine. Divide newspaper sheets in half lengthwise using a ruler. The width of the strips should be about 10 cm.
Take a knitting needle and wrap a strip of newspaper around it so that the knitting needle is at an angle. Roll the newspaper into tubes, wrapping around the knitting needles. Fix the ends of the tubes with glue so that they do not unfold.
Turn each of the strips into a tube. You will need about 30 straws to weave a small basket.
When the tubes are ready, take a jar or bottle, circle its base by placing it on a piece of cardboard, and cut out 2 round pieces.
This craft needs a frame. Prepare it by flattening one end of the tube (3 cm). Next, apply glue to one round part, and glue the flattened ends of the tubes to it. Place the tubes at an equal distance from each other. To do this, pre-mark the cardboard. For better adhesion, use a press or glue gun.
Lubricate the second circle of cardboard with glue and close the junction with it newspaper tubes and bottom. Lift the tubes up and fasten with an elastic band. The frame is ready, you can start weaving.
Weaving baskets from newspaper tubes.Take one tube with a flattened edge and glue it to the base. Get it behind the nearest right tube, so that it wraps around the frame from the outside. Then point it in the other direction so that the tube wraps around the frame vine with inside. Continue weaving further, alternating blanks, until the bottom row is formed. When the tube ends, build it up with another, screwing it into the first.
Before you start weaving the second row, place a jar or bottle inside, the base of which served as the bottom, and only then continue to weave.
Weave exactly as much as you need. Cut the end of the last tube and fix it with glue in the middle of the basket. Cut the first frame vine too, and bring the remaining end inward and plant it on glue. Do the same with the second one.
Weaving completed. It remains only to paint the basket as you like. Apply the paint in two layers, waiting until the first is completely dry. Apply a third coat of paint to the base of the basket.
The finished basket can be used as a vase for flowers made from colored or corrugated paper, or as a box for storing all sorts of little things.
You can weave a basket not only from tubes, but also from simple paper strips. It is better to work step by step so as not to miss anything.
First of all, we prepare the strips. cut colored paper into strips about 1.5 cm thick or less. Thin sheets of paper are best folded in half for greater strength, while glossy and dense sheets can not be folded. Therefore, from thin paper, cut strips twice as wide as required for weaving.
If the strips are too short, glue a few pieces together to avoid adding paper while weaving.
When cutting paper, use a ruler and sharp scissors. Mark the sheets with a pencil, and then cut. The smoother the stripes, the neater the craft will turn out.
The number of strips depends on the size and shape of the product. Since weaving has a checkerboard pattern, it is better to use two colors of paper.
Take 8 strips of two different colors, 32 cm long and up to 2 cm wide. Put four strips on the table and weave the remaining strips into them in a checkerboard pattern, as shown in the photo. The resulting square should be in the middle, being strong enough.
To form the sides, fold the strips up and braid them with other stripes. Bend the excess inside the crafts and glue. The basket handle can be made from one or more strips.

For those who are just starting to master weaving from newspaper tubes, it is easier to learn from small jobs. But this does not mean that you need to do only samples.
Although this is useful in many ways, and in some cases even necessary (when mastering a new weaving pattern, for example), it is boring to constantly weave pieces. It is much better to make small useful things - pencil boxes, boxes, coasters, etc. For beginners, it makes it possible to diversify children's games or create interesting home decor. Try making a small captive doll basket - it's easy.
Tubes for weaving. They will need a little - about 30 pieces (depending on the height and diameter of the basket). Tubes are often called newspaper tubes, but, in fact, they are now being made from newspapers less and less. In stationery stores, you can buy consumer paper cheaply - newsprint, but clean, without letters that are difficult to paint over. It is sold in packs, the number of sheets is different - and 100, and 250, and 500. See how easy it is to make tubes from consumer paper (or newspaper, if you still use one).
Coloring clean paper is as easy as shelling pears - just use a diluted stain. The color of the tubes depends on what color stain you use. Choose a liquid that gives a light wood decor (for example, alder), and you will get tubules whose color is identical to the color of the natural treated vine. Here are the recommendations
Glue. You can take PVA for gluing the tubes, while it is good to help yourself with clothespins or other clips, fixing two tubes together until the glue hardens. To make it faster, use a hot gun for needlework. Just make sure that the glue does not spread through the tubes, use it carefully, drop by drop. The hardened hot glue is transparent, but not so much as to be invisible, the surface of the work, stained with it, turns out to be sloppy.
But PVA glue will still be needed at the final stage - to give the basket strength.
Acrylic varnish or another - for wood, parquet, yacht.
We glue 8 tubes in pairs. We fix them in the middle so that we get rays. This will be the racks that we will braid. You can take one tube per rack, but with double weaving it turns out smoother, and the basket itself will be stronger.
We bend the tube in half, glue it to one of the racks.
We begin to braid - we bring one end of the working tube under the bottom of the rack, lay the second on top. See photo for clarification.
Weave around the bottom of the basket. The diameter of the bottom is the diameter of the basket.
We select a suitable container (jar, bottle, etc.). Puts a bottom on it.
We lower the racks down.
We continue simple weaving - we weave in the same way as we weaved the bottom.
When the basket is already the desired height, we remove the work from the container, fix (tuck into weaving or glue inside) the working tubes.
We make a simple bend (this is weaving for beginners).
First, we circle the first rack behind the second (following it), then we circle it in front of the third and refuel for it. You can help yourself with a knitting needle. We do this with all the racks. It turns out a simple pigtail.
We fill three tubes with the ends into the hole around the perimeter of the basket.
We bend the ends and fasten the tubes together, braiding them 2-3 times with a piece of the tube.
We glue.
We begin to roll the tubes along the length. We do it almost to the end.
We also insert the ends on the reverse side into the hole between the tubes along the edge of the basket, braid, fasten.
We cover the almost finished basket both inside and outside with PVA glue, half mixed with water.
It will take time for the basket to dry, it is better to leave it overnight.
We cover the work with varnish - also the entire internal and external surface. Don't forget to apply varnish to the handle. It will take more time for the varnish to dry - about 2 days.
The basket is ready. Tube weaving for beginners is simple, but it can be used to make interesting decorative things.

How to make a basket from newspaper tubes
Below we place a master class on the method of twisting tubes and weaving baskets simple pattern. In order for the basket to turn out even, you will need a braiding box.
So, for work you will need a braiding box, newspaper tubes, clothespins, scissors and glue
How to twist newspaper tubes:
We cut the newspaper, one page, into two parts
We take a barbecue skewer or a knitting needle and begin to wind a newspaper strip around it at this angle:
Glue the tip of the newspaper to the tube
With the correct twisting of the tubes, one end will turn out to be narrower than the second. If you need to lengthen the newspaper tube, then simply insert the narrow end of the tube into the wide end and fix them with glue. Tubes can be painted in any color.
We take a cardboard for the bottom of the basket and glue the tubes to it
If you have the time and opportunity, and most importantly the desire, you can try yourself and learn how to weave baskets from a more traditional material - willow branches. They are flexible, hold their shape well in weaving, and are obtained from them beautiful products: not only baskets, but also other interior items, and even furniture.
Before considering the correct weaving technology, it is necessary to study the features of twisting the newspaper tubes themselves. The beauty and strength of the finished baskets directly depend on their quality.
Let's take an example of how to make tubes from ordinary newspapers, so that we can then weave a basket or any other product out of them. They can be made from different paper, on which the density and other characteristics will directly depend. Printing paper, on which newspapers are printed, is the thinnest, so the tubes made from it are flexible and most convenient to use.
The sequence of actions is as follows:
You need to take a sheet of newspaper.
Bend it in half lengthwise and cut along the fold with a utility knife.
Bend the resulting two sheets in half again and cut along the fold again.
Thus, we divided the newspaper sheet into 4 equal parts and got 4 tube blanks. To weave any product, you will need a lot of strips, so you first need to cut the blanks, and then start making tubes.
It is convenient to twist the tubes with a long thin stick, instead of which you can use a regular knitting needle or a bicycle knitting needle. The cut off strip of newspaper must be placed on the table. Attach a knitting needle to the lower right corner of the strip so that both its ends protrude beyond this strip, and tightly wind the newspaper around it. When the entire strip of newspaper is wound on a knitting needle, one loose corner will remain, on which you need to apply a drop of glue and press it.
Carefully pull out the knitting needle from the resulting tube.
The tubes can be made in various sizes both in length and in thickness, depending on which product will be made from them. If you need to make a short tube, then the prepared strip of newspaper must be cut into two parts across. You can use knitting needles of different diameters and make tubes of different thicknesses.
To twist tubes of different strengths, you need to use certain types of paper. You can make basket blanks from an A4 sheet of plain printing paper by cutting it lengthwise into 4 strips and twisting tubes out of them using the technology described above. They are very durable compared to tubes made from newspapers.
To obtain less rigid tubes, the newspaper sheet is divided into 6 parts, obtaining 6 strips.
To make white tubes, you need newsprint with one white side. The cut off strip of newspaper should be placed on the table with the white side up. Attach a knitting needle to the right corner of the strip below and wind the newspaper around the knitting needle. The newspaper should be pressed tightly against the needle to make the tube neat.
White tubes are dyed in various colors and used for weaving multi-colored products.
To make the tube longer, connect two or three short tubes by inserting into each other.
If the end of one tube does not fit well into the other, it should be pressed with your fingers and twisted, applying a little glue for a strong connection.
The resulting tubes are great for making any wickerwork, including baskets.
Weaving baskets from newspaper tubes for beginners step by step: photo
In order to weave a basket of newspaper tubes well, you do not need to have any special knowledge. A little practice and strict adherence to technology allow you to make a completely high-quality product.
To make baskets you will need:
You need to follow the sequence of actions:
In the absence of colored tubes, it is necessary to divide a dense newspaper sheet with one white side into 4 parts and twist the tubes out of them using a knitting needle as described in the first part of the article. Half of the resulting tubes should be painted in dark blue, and the other half in blue.
Take 8 dark blue tubes and divide them into 4 groups of 2 pieces each.
Place 2 groups on the table vertically and parallel to each other.
Place the third group of tubes horizontally from right to left on top of the first pair of tubes lying vertically on the table and under the second pair.
The fourth group, on the contrary, should be placed under the first pair of tubes lying on the table and on top of the second. Tighten the resulting structure tightly.
You need to take one blue tube and bend it in half.
Place the left horizontal edge of the workpiece between the two ends of the tube and bend the lower part of the blue tube over the upper vertical axis of 4 blue tubes, and the upper part under the bottom of this axis.
Braid the remaining parts of the workpiece in the same way, making a full circle.
Increase the length of the blue tube by inserting two of the same tubes into it, and make another circle of weaving.
On the third circle, divide the horizontal part of the four dark blue tubes in half and weave between them the two ends of the blue tube, passing them alternately over and under the bottom, and also pulling and holding with your finger to fix the division of the axis of the blue tubes into 2 parts.
Sweat the same technology to make two full circles of weaving.
Weave blue tubes through each dark blue tube for three circles.
Cut the ends of the blue tube obliquely with sharp scissors and insert 2 blue tubes into them.
Make 1 circle of weaving.
Connect the dark blue tubes with the blue ones, and weave 1 more circle.
Bend at the base and lift all the blue tubes up.
Place a plastic container in the center of the base of the basket.
Start weaving the connecting part between the base and the future walls of the basket, hooking the blue tubes over the blue ones and turning them in the other direction, and then braiding them over the vertically standing tubes, pulling them tightly to each other.
